Railways Order Mobile Charging Points Shut from 11 PM to 5 AM After Power Bank Blast
A power bank explosion aboard the Mumbai-Howrah Mumbai Mail near Bandamunda has prompted Indian Railways to order the mandatory shutdown of mobile charging points from 11 PM to 5 AM, with no exemptions permitted.
The incident occurred in coach B-3 of train number 12809 Mumbai Mail, which was travelling from Mumbai to Howrah and passing near Bandamunda in Odisha on October 25. A passenger's power bank reportedly exploded while it was connected to a charging point.
Taking cognisance of the incident, the Railway Board has issued instructions to all zonal railway headquarters to ensure that mobile charging points in train coaches remain switched off during the specified hours.
In an order, Soumit Gupta, Officer on Special Duty, Electrical Engineering (General), Railway Board, highlighted the recent incident in South Eastern Railway, where onboard train staff had failed to switch off mobile charging points at night.
As a result, a passenger's power bank exploded while charging, prompting the railway authorities to issue fresh instructions to prevent a recurrence of such incidents.
The Railway Board has advised all regional railways to issue necessary instructions to their concerned employees to ensure that mobile charging points in train coaches are mandatorily switched off from 11 PM to 5 AM.
The order also makes it clear that no exemption will be permitted from implementing the shutdown during these hours.
The directive places responsibility on railway staff to ensure that charging points remain switched off throughout the specified period, following the power bank explosion aboard the Mumbai Mail.
